The Iconic Coral Light Fixture by David Trubridge Is Now Available For Use Outdoors

The great outdoors just got a whole lot greater with the release of David Trubridge’s Coral light design in a brand new, outdoor-rated version. Gardens, patios, porches, decks, yards, pavilions and verandas finally have the opportunity to be enriched by an exquisite David Trubridge light. A high-pressure laminate material called Panelex –along with wet location UL electrics– enables the new Coral pendant light fixture to be used outdoors. An optional suspension rod is also available for stabilizing the outdoor light in windy settings. The Outdoor Coral pendant is assembled with raw aluminum rivets which adds a splash of contrast to the wood grain finish. And, of course, trademark Trubridge shadows cast dazzling dances on the closest surfaces.

From nature, into nature. Outdoor pendant lighting inspired by sea life.

The Coral light is the most popular and best-selling design from our expansive collection of pendant lights and table lamps, but until now has been rated for indoor use only. David Trubridge drew inspiration from sea life he witnessed while snorkeling in his beloved New Zealand. “The way it grows outwards with fingers,” says Trubridge, “reminds me of coral.” The design is based on the geometric polyhedral form, a structure that means many faces in Greek; an apt designation. The Outdoor Coral pendant light is made from a high-pressure laminate material called Panelex, which ensures long-lasting outdoor lighting, contributing to its sustainability. Garden lighting never sounded so environmentally sound.

Outdoor garden lighting made from sustainable materials, ten years in the making.

When we embarked upon the mission of creating a sustainable, long lasting outdoor lighting product with a low environmental impact, we did not know it would take almost ten years to actualize. The demands of outdoor exposure meant that we had to find just the right material and that we would have to compromise slightly on the use of petroleum in Outdoor Coral’s laminate material, Panelex.

70% of Panelex’s material is wood fibers from totally renewable sources, with the remaining 30% being thermosetting resins. The result of this fabrication is a material that protects against the sun’s radiation, guaranteeing color stability over time. It is 100% pest resistant and impervious to bacteria that might deteriorate it. And because it is an inert material, Panelex even thwarts the growth of surface fungi, mosses, or lichens, which is necessary for outdoor lighting. Panelex naturally acts as a thermal and acoustic insulator, and it contributes to net carbon capture, making it environmentally friendly. The sustainable features of Panelex coalesce with David Trubridge’s environmental ethos of utilizing natural materials and processes and desire to “leave a delicate footprint.” The resulting collaboration is an outdoor lighting win-win.
