“Giving back is not merely an act of kindness or compassion but of necessity. We are programmed to take what we believe to be ours, be it motivated by greed or our own sense of entitlement, and to change that way of thinking takes a conscious effort – and often a kick in the pants! Never before has it been so apparent that there are severe consequences to our actions, and that we ALL need to do our bit. Like the tide, there needs to be that constant exchange else all we touch will become stagnant and eventually die” -Stephen Pikus

Stephen Pikus Design

Resource-Conscious South African Lighting

Stephen Pikus was raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, often accompanying his contractor father to building sites, and has had a love for working with his hands ever since. A little over a decade ago he, his wife Samantha and their first born daughter Tahlita (subsequently Mila has been added to the herd) felt the tug to sell up and volunteer for an NGO based on a farm in the beautiful hills of Limpopo province, South Africa. An orphanage and various other community-uplifting projects made up the backbone of the organization, and each of these spaces needed to be made beautiful with very little budget. Stephen worked with numerous talented creatives and artists, and fell in love with the process – and, so often, the challenge – of transforming “one mans’ trash into another mans’ treasure”.

Now hyper-focused on utilizing hand-made techniques and primarily recycled materials, Stephen’s lighting designs can be viewed all over the world as a testament to sustainability and responsibility to preserve our planet and our precious resources harvested from it.

TRuK Range

The TRuK lighting range is a unique, beautiful solution that embodies a concept of elegance in utility. These light fixtures begin life as automotive air filters, with some spending up to 10,000+ hours under the hood of a diesel engine haul truck before the team rescues and refurbishes them. Stephen’s local team (located in Johannesburg, South Africa) works closely with micro recyclers to repurpose these discarded diesel truck filters to create each unique light, leaving a footprint of love and respect both for people and the environment.

Years later, Stephen and his team of artisans often work with South Africa’s top interior designers and architects. They have been steadily partnering with automotive clients (Volvo, Bridgestone) that seek to improve their business’s sustainability without sacrificing artistry and quality.

Available in 4 sizes and 4 finishes with the option for outdoor-rated electrics during the specification process – suitable for high-end residential, commercial, and hospitality projects.

Fire + Ice Range

Refined and sophisticated yet ruggedly elemental, FIRE + ICE adds a layer of laid-back elegance to any residence, hospitality, or commercial retail space. Designed and created by Stephen Pikus Design, each one-of-a-kind fixture is meticulously handcrafted of recycled glass. Pieces of smoothed opaque glass are individually strung together to create an intricate, functional work of art. Chandeliers can be custom made in a variety of shapes and sizes to complement any space.

The city of Johannesburg is still developing city-wide recycling ordinances and Stephen’s local team works closely with micro recyclers to sort through broken glass and diesel truck filters to create each unique fixture. Their mission is to produce unique, beautiful products, leaving a footprint of love and respect both for people and the environment.
